Boat racing became a popular sport on Long Island in the early 1900s. Several boat yards specialized in designing and building high speed hulls with huge engines. With horse-power the priority, the operator barely had room to move once inserted into the cockpit. These boats were later used as rum runners and put to work evading the Coast Guard during prohibition.

By 1900, East Hampton was already a fashionable summer resort, with a thriving business district along its still unpaved Main Street.  But the town has a long history as well. It was settled by a few Southampton families in 1651; in those years important revenues came from the dead whales cast up on its shores. In 1653, Goody Edwards was sentenced to stand with a split stick on her tongue for speaking slander, while Good Farlick was transported to New Haven to be tried for witchcraft.
